Checkpoints have been set up at Florida’s borders, including those it shares with Alabama, to prevent people from coronavirus-stricken areas from traveling to the Sunshine State. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced travelers will be stopped and screened as they come into Florida. The measures are aimed specifically at those coming from the hard-hit states of Louisiana and New York, with checkpoints set up on I-10 and I-95.
People stopped at the checkpoints will be asked to provide information on where they are traveling from and the address of where they will isolated for a 14-day quarantine period. The prohibitions do not cover commercial delivery trucks coming to the state. Florida was already requiring air travelers from Louisiana, New York and New Jersey to self-quarantine for 14 days. Suspension of vacation rentals DeSantis has also suspended vacation rents for two weeks. The order came as the state “is experiencing an increase in individuals fleeing to Florida from out-of-state locations where “shelter-in-place” orders are being implemented and community spread exists.” There are exceptions to the order. Hotels, motels, resorts and time-shares are exempted and visitors can finish their trips if they’re already in place.
