PamelaR: Most people here are experienced investors and traders. My suggestion is to buy ETF's like SSO, that track the big indices. Believe it or not, that is what John Stewart, the financial editor (or just a writer) for the New York Times indicates he plans to do. That is the safest bet right now. Another safe bet, imo, would be to buy big name companies that are beaten down. U have to do your research.

Personally, if I were reemerging after an investment hibernation, I wouldn't buy the small caps that are recommended here. I would go with big and safe for now. But that is me. Everyone is different.
