The shareholders are always last in line when it comes to bankruptcies. Even when there is a restructuring of debt, a reorganization of the company, etc., and business operations continue, the shareholders lose all or the vast majority of their investments, as the companies have to offer equity for debt to the creditors, cancelling the existing shares. That's why FINRA and the SEC have issued strong cautions against investing in bankrupt companies, as it will very likely be a total loss.

I swear I’ll never use the phrase “you can’t make this stuff up” ever again after being on the OTC. Apparently you can.
