Pollution is one of the reasons but not the main one or one of top priority. Burning oil is dirty no doubt but also inefficient and it runs out and runs out rather fast. Pollution is not something we happened to learn just recently, it's been known always. But kept on using it and always building bigger and bigger guzzlers. The answer is: Big boys was making Big money on it. And when GM built EV-1 electric vehicles that project was quickly shut down using all kinds of lame excuses, but it was brutally shut down and prohibited for public to own one. But Elon Musk successful in proving the whole world that EV are much better solution to transportation compare to ICE. Practical, safe, much more efficient, simpler and faster to build, has much less moving parts means less and cheaper maintenance required, increased longevity specs much better than the ice, and the most important part is that it powered by renewable much more cleaner and more efficient energy.
