The complicated disease of Covid-19 also caused Vietnamese silkworm growers to face many difficulties in seed sources and development of raw material areas.

Automated silk reeling system in Bao Loc City (Lam Dong) /// Lam Vien

At the sustainable silkworm breeding development conference, held by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on 6.3 in Da Lat City (Lam Dong), the Department of Livestock Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) said that when the Covid-19 outbreak occurred, people rearing Vietnamese silkworms cannot import the white cocoon type cocoon seeds for production Only when the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development sends written documents to relevant ministries and branches and the two provinces of Lang Son and Quang Ninh will the difficulties gradually be removed.

Depends on silkworm breeding sources

The reason is that Vietnam has not been able to take initiative in the source of dual silkworm egg breeds, which must be imported from China to 90% through quota. When the Covid-19 disease occurred in China, the import of silkworm eggs became even more difficult.

According to the Department of Livestock Production, the import of silkworm eggs through non-quota inspection has not been checked for quality and disease control, leading to high risks for producers, this is a challenge for the Vietnamese mulberry industry. Dang Vinh Tho, Chairman of the Vietnam Mulberry Association, added that in the last two years, Lam Dong and Dak Nong, Dak Lak and Gia Lai provinces have increased the area of ??10,000 mulberry growing.

Particularly in Lam Dong province, there are up to 15,000 households cultivating about 8,500 hectares of mulberry, but the demand for bimetal silkworm eggs to produce about 500,000 boxes / year must be imported from China.

Right now, if Vietnam does not have a strong development strategy for the mulberry industry, in the next 10 - 15 years we will not have enough raw materials to produce.

Mr. Dang Vinh Tho, Chairman of Vietnam Silkworm Association, the representative of the Central Center for Silk Mulberry Research recommends that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development continue to assign this center and Lam Dong Center for Experimental Agriculture and Forestry Research to implement a ministerial-level key project, period 2021 - 2025 research on breeding mulberry and silkworm breeding for ecological regions. In which, focusing on researching to create high-yielding silkworm varieties with good cocoon quality, adapting to Vietnamese conditions.

Need a sustainable development strategy

At the conference, Mr. Phung Duc Tien, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that the mulberry industry has been a thriving industry in Vietnam for a long time with the increasing area, output, and value. in the international market.

The first evidence is that Vietnam's silk production ranks among the top five in the world, behind only China, India, Uzbekistan and Thailand. In 2019, silkworm production will reach nearly 9,200 tons, silk production will reach more than 1,500 tons and over 5.2 million meters of silk. However, our country's mulberry industry still faces many difficulties in state management, international cooperation, chain linkage, processing technology, quarantine ...

Notably, according to Mr. Dang Vinh Tho, although silk production is increasing year by year, nowadays Vietnam has to import thousands of tons of silk from China, Brazil ... to process Matsumura (Japan). exported to Japan, Italy, India and France. "Right now, if Vietnam does not have a strong development strategy for the mulberry industry, in the next 10 - 15 years we will not have enough raw materials to produce," said Tho.

Vietnam is stable and developed in the coming years, MARD quickly negotiates with China to agree on quarantine criteria, from which businesses can import silkworm eggs by official quotas, ensure control of seed sources. On the other hand, the Ministry should coordinate with the Ministry of Industry and Trade to take measures to prevent trade frauds in the export of silk and to prevent acts of importing unidentified silk of goods causing damage to domestic silk weaving establishments. .

According to the Department of Agricultural Product Processing and Market Development (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), the problem of Vietnamese mulberry industry is not difficult in output but an economic problem and low economic efficiency of production. due to competition from countries, especially China. Therefore, there must be a solution to improve productivity, reduce costs, enhance technology in production, diversify products, support businesses to build product brands for Vietnamese silk ...

According to the Vietnam Mulberry Association, it is expected that by 2020, Vietnam's mulberry industry will reach over 2,000 tons of silk and 7 million meters of silk of all kinds.

In the whole country, there are 32 provinces and cities specializing in mulberry and silkworm raising, with an area of ??mulberry growing of about 15,000 ha, particularly Lam Dong province has more than 8,500 ha and accounting for 73% of the country's silk production.

In the Central Highlands, to form and develop a complete agricultural and industry sector from mulberry planting, silkworm raising, silk germination and silk weaving.
