You are correct on all counts and the short sellers are playing a dangerous game if they are borrowing shares and do not have the money to cover. That is where so much pain happened in the ‘30s the damage was so bad they put in rules about how much you could borrow. Those rules have been relaxed a great deal and I hope nobody gets caught badly. You are wise to set the stoploss! You can always buy back in.
