Not sure how much y'all actually want to know, but https means that the data is encrypted between you and the web server. If you're doing on-line banking or shopping, it's what you want to see.

By being encrypted, the data can't be tampered with or read by any third party in the middle other than you and the web site.

This is a good thing ;)
