Those who scream the loudest will eventually experience issues related to damaged vocal chords and other such maladies associated strained vocal chords. Particular groups that have certain chronic maladies associated with attenuated or excessive use include Death Metal singers, coaches for various sports and other occupations that require loud vocalizations.

A death growl (or simply a growl) is a vocal style (an extended vocal technique) usually employed by death metal singers but also used in other heavy metal styles, such as metalcore. Death growls are sometimes criticized for their "ugliness".

All in all, the most important thing is to practice this safely and with caution. This is my favorite vocal style and I do it very often, but if you get too crazy and push too hard, you can seriously damage the tissues in your throat as well as your vocal chords. Be careful. While doing this, keep a bottle of room temperature water handy. Other than the occasional loud false chord, most of your screams or growls should be no louder than the second time you try to get someone's attention while they are wearing earbuds.

Furthermore, when you do this, DO NOT tighten up your throat, there's other ways to get more distortion. it's a bad technique, and it will destroy your stamina and probably screw up your voice.

There are many videos online explaining how to do all of this, but always use your best judgement and don't take advice from people who seem ignorant or stupid. Also I'd advise you look up Melissa Cross, she won't teach you how to sound good but she will teach you the basic techniques and how to do them safely.

The more you know. Oh, and GNCP is dead money walking so avoid like the plague, not the death metal band, but the one that killed millions during the middle ages.
