That is my guess as well.

I also think the timing is due to the latest technology currently being under provisional patents. March 19th may be around the time they lose provisional patent status so the cat will be out of the bag. If it's a major breakthrough, might as well give yourself a platform to explain implications and importance of this breakthrough.

Remember, with our DS technology, we were seeing tensile strengths of up over 2 GPa, and that wasn't even using the sequences from the darwin's bark spider. The old gold standard was the dragline of N. clavipes, which usually has dragline tensile strength of .7-1.2 GPa.

If using the gene sequences of the Darwins bark spider dragline silk (reported to be ~1.7 GPa), and using repeating motifs and full knock-out of silkworm silk protein, it is a real possibility that we not only pass the toughness of aramid fibers (we already did that a while ago) but also the tensile strength.

That's what I would call an exciting announcement
