Van Morrison, master song writer, composed the rock song Gloria in 1966. A Chicago Top 40 station refused to play it due to a couple lines in the lyric that were considered off limits. The song was cover by a local blues band the Shadows of Knight the same year. They changed the lines to satisfaction of the censors and the rest is history. Critics say this song was the first type of a genre that would be called garage rock or grunge rock, which Kurt Cobain made famous with his band Nirvana. If anything it is boiling over with male adolescent sexuality. The lead singer's voice has that angry, rebellious edge that Cobain was noted for. The group continued to perform into the current century, albeit with different members.
