JD Souther is famous for only one hit song, When You're Only Lonely, released in 1979. Souther hired Danny Kortchmar to play guitar, David Sanborn saxophone, and to help out with the harmony, Phil Everly, Jackson Browne, and three members of the Eagles. Souther wrote songs for other famous pop artists of the day. The song seems like it should have been written by Roy Orbison. Souther himself does some vocal acrobatics reminiscent of Orbison. The overall feel of the song harks back to a prior era of 50s ballads. It is indeed unique in its own right.
