j3pflynn, combjelly, gollem - banks. Obviously no one here tried the experiment to see what happens. Neither have I, but earlier dual-bank products worked this way: Both banks have to have the same amount of memory (and the same memory timings) or it would configure as single bank.

So, let's say you have two 1M DIMMs in separate banks and you want to add a 2M DIMM. You move one of the existing DIMMs to be in the same bank as the other, and you put the new DIMM in the other bank.

I will not say this is definitive, but I am 90% sure this is how it works.
