This is the email I received from Grant today where I then posted the article.
"From: Grant Gordon <GGordon@venturistherapeutics.com> Sent: Saturday, January 18, 2020 1:19 PM Subject: HOW IMPORTANT ARE PATENTS?
Some of our fellow shareholders messaged me after the recent update email asking why we make such a big deal about patents & being laser-focused on building our patent portfolio. Well, Novo Nordisk must be considered the masters of creating value through a huge patent portfolio (IP) year after year, after year. They entered the insulin market in 1923 when insulin was invented by 2 Candian scientists. I confess that I, unfortunately, have to use their NovoLog insulin myself on a daily basis. Novo Nordisk has built itself into a $114bn company in large part due to maximizing its IP. “Anyone, I would imagine, who has tried to create a biotech company knows just how important patents are. You learn this when you’re studying, and again at your first job, and if you haven’t done so before, you realize it the first time you meet potential investors.” (Mads Øvlisen, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Novo Nordisk).
Esteban Burrone, Consultant, SMEs Division 1 “Life sciences and biotechnology are widely regarded as one of the most promising frontier technologies for the coming decades.” 2 After information technology, biotechnology is increasingly recognized as the next wave in the knowledge-based economy. www.wipo.int
Not only does IP protect our therapies from predators, but it also creates value for our shareholders. Each patent we add is accretive to the value of your investment.
I hope this is useful.
