Johnny Mathis recorded that song when he was 65, but I can’t detect any degradation whatsoever in his voice; he might even sound better than he did when he was young.

As superb as Mathis’ recording is, the best cover of this song from Phantom of the Opera, IMO, is one by Vic Damone, which I heard on the syndicated radio show, American Standards by the Sea several years ago. I’ve looked everywhere for Damone’s recording, to no avail. It’s possible that the radio show had a demo version that was never commercialized.
