MTV Gets Down With Downloads
by Brad King

12:20 p.m. April 4, 2001 PDT
Music television is about to expand to the Internet, as all five major labels announce a new retail service that will allow consumers to purchase digital downloads through MTV's online network.
The downloads will initially be sold through the MTV Radio and VH1 At Work streaming stations, which use Rioport's Pulse One Media Services delivery system. When listeners hear a song they want to purchase, they can click on a buy button and immediately purchase a secure download.

July 26, 2001 / News Archives Terra Lycos, IBM Ink Tech, Ad Deals
By Colin C. Haley

MACROPROCESSING
Under a new two-year deal, Terra Lycos will buy millions of dollars worth of servers, software and services from IBM (NYSE:IBM). The Spanish Internet media giant, with U.S. headquarters in Waltham, Mass., and the Armonk, N.Y., computer maker will also jointly develop new technologies and applications. "The pairing of the two global leaders provides a platform for technology exchanges and collaboration on strategic projects," Joaquim Agut, Terra Lycos' executive chairman, said in a statement. The infrastructure component covers a range of Big Blue products including: servers that run on UNIX, Windows NT, or Linux operating systems; and software from Lotus (an IBM division) and recently acquired Informix. Further strengthening technology ties between the companies, Terra Lycos CTO Tim Wright will join IBM's advanced e-business council, a group working to identify emerging trends. In a separate announcement, IBM said it will advertise on Terra Lycos' network of sites. Terra Lycos, formed in October by the merger of Terra Networks, of Madrid, Spain, and Lycos, of Waltham, Mass., operates in 42 countries and reaching 99 million unique monthly visitors. IBM space buys should help Terra Lycos boost its ad business. As dot-coms folded and larger IT companies looked to cut costs, online media firms have suffered. The decline was partially responsible for Terra Lycos cutting 15 percent of its staff in May. Nearly 70 percent of Terra Lycos' business comes from its media properties. Specific financial terms of either the equipment or advertising deal were not disclosed, however the companies said the hardware portion was a "multi-million" price tag over the life of the contract. Shares of TRLY were up 0.11 to 6.24 in morning trading, while IBM stock shed 0.89, or 1 percent, to 104.
