27th was last day for tax loss selling. I hear this often towards years end after the cutoff , but most forget that the trade has to clear by years end

That was some good information. But I have a question for you. I have done my own taxes for 50+ years. I have always used the 'Buy' or 'Sell' date for tax reporting, not the date that the trade settled. I'm not concerned with beating end of year dates, because I do all my transactions well before the last days of the year. The question is, am I making a major tax violation for using the date of the transaction and not the settlement date for my tax reporting?
