Short Takes: FHFA’s Calabria and the ‘Affordable Housing’ Crowd

Next Year ?

Taking Comments on a Survey

According to a new research note from Capital Alpha, housing
advocates’ distrust of Federal Housing Finance Agency
Director Mark Calabria appears to be growing.

Capital Alpha said it hosted a panel last week
“previewing the kinds of moves some claim Calabria
could make to gradually shrink the GSEs’ footprint
and end their cross-subsidies integral to lowering
homeownership costs for modest mean borrowers…”

CA believes this could push Democrats to block him next year,
“but we’d be highly skeptical…”

In accordance with the requirements of the Paperwork
Reduction Act of 1995, the FHFA Tuesday morning said
it is seeking public comments concerning the National
Survey of Mortgage Originations.

What exactly is the NSMO? According to a notice in
The Federal Register, it’s a recurring quarterly survey
of consumers who “recently obtained” a residential
mortgage.

Apparently, 6,000 recent borrowers receive the survey
and are asked 95 multiple-choice and
short-answer questions…

Apparently, the NSMO is a component of the National
Mortgage Database Program, a joint venture between the
FHFA (the regulator of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac)
and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau…
