Wave 5 was the extended wave, simple as that, I can't credit any one short seller for the move up. The clue to knowing why the large advance occurred in the 5th was the third didn't go the normal 2.6-3 x ...The huge selloff from the extended 5th is totally the norm on its own. Wave 2's can also play out with nasty declines just like we're witnessing.
