It’s like people who hold stock in a company in certificate form. It’s not like those pieces of paper self destruct or someone comes around to collect them when the company is dissolved. They simply become worthless, untradeable and useful only as wallpaper.
The same thing happens with the “electronic” version. The only difference is at some point the broker will want a fee to maintain that share “balance” showing otherwise they will simply remove them from the account.
