Definition
The Census Bureau quarterly services report focuses on information and technology-related service industries. These include information; professional, scientific and technical services; administrative & support services; and waste management and remediation services. These sectors correspond to three NAICS sectors (51, 54, and 56). The quarterly services report produces estimates of total operating revenue and the percentage of revenue by class of customer. The advance report is released at about six weeks after the end of the quarter. Final quarterly data are released about three weeks after that. (Bureau of the Census)

Highlights
E-commerce sales rose a quarterly 5.0 percent in the third quarter versus a revised 4.8 percent in the second quarter (initially 4.2 percent). Year-on-year, e-commerce sales were up 16.9 percent in the third quarter. As a percentage of total retail sales, third-quarter e-commerce rose 4 tenths to 11.2 percent.

E-commerce sales are sales of goods and services where an order is placed by the buyer or price and terms of sale are negotiated over the Internet, an extranet, Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) network, or other online system. Payment may or may not be made online.
