Another great interview from Garvis Toler 2 days ago:

I definitely like him bringing up the 80/20 rule. I know I've mentioned it several times. I don't remember if it was here, but definitely on the record at Seeking Alpha several times. That is a universal law. As true as fractal geometry, recurring in the universe everywhere. A true law.

I like his focus: 20% of the problems that affect 80% of what HLIX's clients care about. If you adhere to that law, you are working smart and not hard.

It's true in nutrition too. It's why it is impossible to work off a bad diet. It turns out, 85% of it is about nutrition. I don't care if you are 200 lbs or 100 lbs, your calorie burn on a one mile pace in your comfort zone will burn approximately 100 calories. True, the 100lb person will run circles around his heavier competitor of equal height, but he is working much more efficiently and burning the same amount. And if you work at 80% of your workout capacity, you are getting the same benefit without the unnecessary burnout and injury risks and keeping it simple.

Since an apple is 100 calories, it doesn't take a genius to know that 1 apple is equal to 1 mile you'd have to jog if you went in access of your daily allowance of calories. Once you start running surplus, which is easy to do, you can't work that off. A pint of icecream, if all surplus, is 8 miles you'd have to run if it's Ben and Jerry's full fat creamy and delicious with chocolate chunks!

This truth is universal. It applies to business and the body. And leverage. So work smart, not hard. Thanks for bringing up the Pareto Principle, Garvis. Even the human brain requires 20% of your basal metabolic rate, even though it is only 2% of body weight within normal BMI.

Mankind can cheat in finance. Corruption is rampant and governments steal from the poor. But one thing nobody can do is cheat evolution. You can burn your money and be Mr. Jones, but everybody is equal when it comes to calorie dollars. You can't have more of than Mr. Smith. You can't be a millionaire that way. No cheating, no shady accounting. The body is the ultimate ledger.
