By now it has become almost commonplace to say: "data is the new oil". Many companies are therefore looking at how to turn data into black gold. There was a real wave of close alliances between IT companies and oil companies. Last year Microsoft signed some strategic partnerships with Halliburton, another huge group of oil services, and with Chevron.
