A recreational marijuana dispensary could soon be opening in Quincy.

Green Thumb Industries is now hiring for a variety of positions on its website, the positions specify a Quincy location.

Outdoor Power Inc. is expected to move to their new location near 36th and Broadway before the end of the year, leaving their current location at 27th and Broadway an open space for GTI to move in.

“It’s going to fill that facility, which is a good, positive thing,” said Marcel Wagner with the Great River Economic Development Foundation.

City Planner Chuck Bevelheimer says GTI has filed all the necessary paperwork with the city and as far as the city’s concerned, GTI has the green light to move in.

As per city code, any adult use cannabis dispensary must be at least 100 feet from a licensed daycare or a school. The facility must also be 1500 feet apart from another dispensary.

The location at 27th and Broadway fits that criteria.

“Whether you agree or disagree if we should have recreational marijuana, as far as a development group goes, we look at this from a business aspect,” said Wagner.

Aside from the 3% tax on marijuana sales, economic development leaders are hoping the new business will bring foot-traffic and jobs to the area.

“It brings them right down our retail corridor,” said Wagner. “They have to pass the mall. They have to pass the other big box stores. It’ll generate some additional tax money. It’ll bring more people to the community.”

WGEM has tried several times to get in contact with GTI. We have yet to hear back from them.

Herbal Remedies, the medical marijuana dispensary in Quincy, is also planning on opening a recreational dispensary next to their medical facility. No word yet on if Herbal Remedies or GTI will have recreational dispensaries open come January 1, when marijuana becomes legal statewide.
