Yes it is a hefty investment and hard to justify! I live out in the country where outages can happen with the next ice storm or somebody hits a pole in a wreck. Or a tornado comes along and wipes out 2 miles of poles. Then it's several days before power is restored.
I had a setup similar to yours. A portable generator I would set on the deck and back feed to the house.
I'm not getting any younger and with the kids grown and moved away I wanted the misses to be taken care of when I'm no longer here to do it.
I have a guy that comes around once a year and services the generator and changes the oil and filter in the engine, all for 100 dollar bill. Gives me peace of mind that all is taken care of and ready to go.
If I lived in a city I wouldn't bother with one like this, although it is quiet enough it wouldn't bother the neighbors.
I have to open my door just to hear it running!
