Wow Wow Wow ..the more research I do the more convinced I am of a MASSIVE MASTER PLAN for natural gas in Mexico.

See article below. 5 new power plants POWERED BY NATURAL GAS. Mexico is going to need an increasing amount of natural gas for the foreseeable future AND A PLACE TO STORE A LOT OF IT TO SECURE SUPPLY!

"The fortunes of Mexican electric utility CFE look increasingly tied to political backing, piquing the interest of credit rating agency S&P in CFE’s forthcoming 5-year business plan.

“I think the amount and allocation of investments that the company wants” are key, S&P analyst Daniel Castaneda told BNamericas, “especially with the new administration, and specifically in the three principle sectors: generation, distribution and transmission.”

Castaneda said in previous CFE business plans, the amount of investment in generation decreased slightly, out of recognition that private investment would assume a greater role in the sector over the course of the 5-year period.

“However, with the new administration this may change,” Castaneda said, adding that “how the investment will be allocated” is of great interest to S&P.

“It is not clear that they will follow the financing mechanisms of the previous administration” Castaneda added, pointing out that S&P hopes the CFE's new business plan “will shed some light on” the “financing mechanisms that the company will try to obtain.”

New power plants, and possibly a fourth electricity auction

CFE recently announced it will tender six power generation plants in the coming weeks, in order to add capacity of 3,405MW at a cost of US$2.4bn. Five of these plants will be powered by natural gas.

“We are expecting the private sector to be involved in these projects, specifically the power plants,” Castaneda said.

The exact role of the private sector remains unknown. The government may fund the projects, CFE could fund them by itself or there could even be a larger role for the private sector.

The new plants are slated for construction in Mérida, Salamanca, San Luis Potosí, Baja California, Lerdo and San Luis Río Colorado.

Also, speaking at an energy conference in late September, energy minister Rocío Nahle revived the idea of a fourth electricity auction.

“We’ll have one for 200MW, around Aguascalientes or in that area, which is to say, where it's needed, where it's required, in order to have a balance [of energy] in the country,” she said.

Following on from that statement, the six power plants are the latest sign of the government’s desire to deliberately disperse electricity generation across the country.

Over the past year, the Yucatán peninsula and other parts of the country have been crippled by power blackouts."
