N.F.L. Week 5 Predictions: Our Picks Against the Spread
Red-hot backup quarterbacks will battle in Carolina, Patrick Mahomes gets a spotlight in prime time, and something has to give when hapless Cincinnati hosts winless Arizona.

The offensive revolution has hit a snag or two thanks to injuries and a few teams that have not lived up to expectations. But some surprising contenders have emerged in the N.F.L., and it’s getting deep enough into the season where we can take them seriously. This week offers a matchup of teams thriving with backup quarterbacks, a Friends of Sean McVay Bowl, a chance for Green Bay or Dallas to rebound from last week’s losses and a Sunday night showdown between the undefeated Chiefs and the plucky Colts.

Here is a look at N.F.L. Week 5, with all picks made against the point spread.

Vikings at Giants, 1 p.m., Fox

Line: Vikings -5.5 | Total: 43.5

The Vikings (2-2) are bad on the road, bad in outdoor stadiums and bad against teams with winning records. They are especially bad when all three things converge. The Giants (2-2) would not seemingly qualify as a winning team, but they are 2-0 since Daniel Jones took over as the starting quarterback, even if he regressed to the mean quite a bit last week, and this game will be outdoors at MetLife Stadium.

Saquon Barkley is likely to miss the game, Jones is facing his toughest test in terms of throwing into Minnesota’s top-notch secondary, and the Giants’ defense does not seem to have the personnel to account for the Vikings’ plethora of elite skill players. There is no way the Giants should win this game, but Minnesota has not earned the right to be a road favorite. Pick: Giants +5.5
