Tim Tebow was in Waco, Texas, on Thursday to speak at a banquet, but the ESPN and SEC Network college football analyst made a surprise trip 40 minutes away from his expected destination.

The Florida Gators Heisman Trophy winner traveled to Gatesville, Texas, where he interacted with inmates at the Alfred D. Hughes Unit. The Alfred D. Hughes Unit is a maximum-security prison that can house up to 2,984 male inmates.

"So grateful to spend time with my new brothers in Christ at Alfred Hughes Unit and encouraging them in the hope that Jesus brings!" Tebow wrote in a tweet that included a selfie of himself with a group of inmates on Thursday.

TMZ also obtained video, which can be seen by clicking here, of Tebow participating in a pushup competition with one of the inmates. The former Gators quarterback, who still works out regularly, was defeated 84-71 in the pushup competition.

Tebow was contacted by the father of an inmate with the hope that Tebow would stop by during his visit to Texas, according to CBS affiliate KWTX. Tebow's foundation then got in touch with Waco residents Suzanne and Terry Mabry, who work with a prison ministry called Discipleship Unlimited, and they helped arrange for Tebow to come inside the prison.

Tebow originally planned to be at the prison for a couple hours, but he ended up spending five hours at the location.

"I was just so emotional, I started crying and was blown away," Suzanne Mabry told KWTX. "He was in such a rush when we left but just to spend the day doing this when he could have been doing whatever but this is his passion and it just showed. It meant so much to us and it meant so much to the guys. Just to know someone cared."
