Anheuser-Busch InBev's UK & Ireland unit is to ditch plastic rings for multi-packs as it invests GBP6.3m (US$7.8m) in new packaging technology.

Budweiser Brewing Group UK&I said today the move, expected before the end of next year, will remove 850 tonnes of plastic from the market annually. Beer brands included in the plastic-free pledge are some of the UK's biggest selling, such as Stella Artois, Budweiser and Bud Light.

Budweiser Brewing Group said it will restructure production at its two main UK breweries - in Magor, South Wales, and Samlesbury, Lancashire - to honour its pledge. Three canning lines will be upgraded to produce alternatives to plastic, including Keel Clips, a new technology that uses recyclable paperboard to create a lighter pack, as well as wraps and boxes.

A-B InBev unveiled plastic-free packaging earlier this year in a trial for the Corona brand in Mexico. The trial used plant-based biodegradable packaging designed to break down into organic material.

Last month, A-B InBev competitor Molson Coors pledged to make all of its packaging either reusable, recyclable, compostable or biodegradable by 2025.
