Shorts don't get cash when they borrow the shares to sell short. Not until they deliver the stock back. They seat on the profit or lost position. We longs pay for shares up front cash. Shorts use a margin acc and if they go 30% down on their bet will get a margin call to come up with money...
If they go down 100 % on their bet than the fun starts...
