So called shorty are in fact the Market Makers who have a limited amount of shares in their own portfolio. When volume gets heavy and there are no shares to be had, the MM will sell shares he doesn't have and try to replace them at a lower cost and pocket the difference. This has been going on forever. Those are the shorters everyone is talking about, not a trader who is selling shares he doesn't have. JMHO
