SK Innovation looks to the future, developing recycling technology to become a leader in battery high-tech

K Innovation has attracted the attention of the industry that the technology for recovering lithium hydroxide (LiOH) * fromthe anode material of electric car waste battery is being promoted commercialization for the first time.

Among domestic and international companies in the electric car battery business, SK Innovation is the only one that is developing such a technology. According to the industry, SK Innovation plans to complete the technology development by the end of this year and complete commercialization by the time the electric vehicle waste battery emissions begin in earnest next year

SK Innovation has already announced that it will build a Battery as a Service (BaaS) system with its business partners as a so-called "5R( Repair, Rental, Recharge, Reuse and Recycling) strategy platform to complete the front and rear value chains in relation to the electric car battery business. The development of lithium hydroxide recovery and reuse technology for waste batteries is interpreted as part of this strategy.

SK Innovation officials explained, "We have already begun producing and supplying ncm 811**, the world's most advanced battery technology, and we are leading the way in the process of completing ncm 91/21/2 (kubban))*** development, and reflecting our commitment to expanding the industrial ecosystem as well as gaining a competitive advantage by developing waste battery recycling technology early."

According to the industry, electric car batteries typically have a 10-year**** warranty, or if the charging and discharging performance within the warranty period falls below 70%, they can be replaced according to consumer requests.

Global market research organizations expect waste batteries to be discharged from the early electric vehicles released from next year, in which case more than 150 GWh of waste batteries will be released worldwide by 2030. Market researchers believe that the amount of waste batteries emitted each year increases exponentially as the electric vehicle market expands.

Market researchers also predict that electric vehicle batteries will expand from about 3% to more than 90% in the global waste battery market. These prospects mean the high growth of the global waste battery market, and major countries and businesses are reportedly busy preparing countermeasures.

Electric vehicle waste battery treatment is usually divided into reuse and recycling.

SK Innovation has been focusing on the development of core technologies that separate key materials such as nickel and cobalt, including lithium, from cathode materials, with the aim of expanding the waste battery market. As a result, it is in front of the development of proprietary technology that can recover lithium in lithium hydroxide form that can be utilized directly in the production of high nickel (High Ni) anode material, such as NCM811 in the waste battery anode.

Although it is commercially available to extract key materials such as lithium, nickel, cobalt recovered from the anode in the waste battery recycling technology, there was no technology that can recover the lithium in the form of high purity hydroxide. Utilizing this technique is known to have the advantage of being able to extract more of the core raw materials such as nickel and cobalt in high purity.

In other words, SK Innovation is putting the development of lithium recovery technology, which is nowhere else inthe world, right in front of its nose. In addition, there is also the advantage that the cost of additives of nickel and cobalt recovery can be significantly reduced when the lithium is recovered at a high recovery rate.

The industry believes that sk innovation's achievements have been a springboard for more than 50 years of catalytic/process technology for productivity improvement and optimization in the energy and chemical sector, as well as technology that differentiates itself from computational science and analytical capabilities.

Waste battery recycling technology developed by SK Innovation has attracted more attention than anything else in that it can reduce serious environmental problems such as soil and marine pollution that can be caused by battery disposal.

SK Innovation officials explained, "It is a great example of double bottom line (DBL) pursuing the creation of social value to solve resource depletion and environmental problems, securing stable raw materials and creating new businesses at the same time."

SK Innovation and other related companies are entering the waste battery recycling business because of the increasing competition to secure raw materials for electric vehicle batteries.

Battery raw materials such as lithium and cobalt are in a situation where price volatility is greatly increased as global battery production increases. Last year, battery companies competed to secure raw materials, including mous with raw materials companies, to ensure stable raw materials, such as cobalt.

In general, since batteries are known to be 40% of the cost of electric vehicles, the industry sees raw material prices and stable supply lines as the key to the competitiveness of electric vehicle battery prices. In addition, because of this, the "waste battery recycling" business, which extracts the raw materials of batteries and reuses them in battery manufacturing, is strongly emerging.

Metals with economic value, such as lithium, nickel and cobalt, among the components that make up the electric vehicle battery, are known to be recyclable more than 90%. This means that a significant portion of the raw materials used in the manufacture of batteries, such as nickel and cobalt, can be obtained from waste batteries.

This article is trying to say that SK Innovations and companies like them, desperately need battery metals. They are trying to squeeze any way possible to get battery metals because in the future it will be in short supply. So this shows us the value of Australian Mines LTD (AMSLF). In the near future this stock will soar. Now is the time to invest in this company.
