The older ones could come of age and go to war in the Pacific or in Europe. Some would not return. The younger ones would have come of age after war's end. What was the Great Depression like. The young men --and women--who volunteered underwent the rigors of basic training. One would think these out of shape and overweight kids would actually lose weight as muscle replaced fat. In reality, after 16 weeks there was a weight gain. Years of undernourishment does that. Military surgeons performed 800,000 dental operations on these kids who couldn't afford simple dental care during that 10-year period. Those too old, too young, too infirm, planted Victory Gardens. Their production accounted for 40 percent of the food that went to feed the troops, sailors and airmen.

They would become the Greatest Generation.
