More Utah businesses sell on Amazon than any other state per capita

SALT LAKE CITY — Like his brothers before him, Christine Krogue’s toddler son was a master at pulling his socks off wherever they went. After losing one too many pairs, she decided it was time to take action.

So the Utah mother of four decided to create an undergarment for infants that would stay on, she wrote in a blog post. She soon began selling her creation on Amazon and eventually founded Mama Moon Boutique — a multi-million dollar business that sells, not just baby socks, but natural fabric softener dryer balls, party games and more.

And Krogue isn’t the only Utahn to take her product to Amazon.

Utah has more small- and medium-sized businesses per capita selling their products on Amazon than any other state in the nation, according to the online retail giant. The company released a list of the top 10 “most entrepreneurial states” Tuesday, and Utah came out on top, followed closely by California, New York, Colorado, New Jersey, Washington, Florida, Delaware, Massachusetts and Oregon.

“It is exciting to see Utah at the top of our list ahead other great entrepreneurial states like California and New York,” Amazon Vice President Nicholas Denissen said in a news release. “From incredible handmade artisans to small businesses inventing sustainable and eco-friendly products, there are thousands of Utah-based businesses demonstrating a tremendous entrepreneurial spirit.”

More than half the items sold on Amazon worldwide are from small- and medium-sized businesses located throughout the U.S. and 130 other countries around the world, according to the news release. Utah’s penchant for multi-level marketing businesses may be a factor in the state’s top placement.

Amazon allows third-parties to sell on its website for $39.99 a month (if they’re selling more than 40 items a month) and $0.99 per sale plus other selling fees (if they’re selling less than 40 items a month).

“Selling on Amazon has made my Utah-based home business possible,” Krogue said in a news release. “Amazon customers make up 99 percent of my business and have allowed me to grow my business to a multi-million dollar company, hire additional stay-at-home moms in my neighborhood and make a difference in the lives of my partners in Nepal.”

Amazon will handle customer service, shipping and fulfillment for third-party businesses selling on its site and will provide bulk listing and reporting tools from the Amazon Marketplace web service for those selling more than 40 items a month.

“More than 300,000 small- and medium-sized businesses from across the U.S. started selling on Amazon in 2017, and we’re working hard to help them all keep growing,” Denissen said.
