2021 Mercedes EQB electric SUV: specs, details and release date
Smaller electric SUV set to join Mercedes EQ range

05 Aug 2019

Mercedes is set to produce an electric version of its forthcoming GLB compact SUV, the German brand has confirmed.

It will fit into the company's electric range below the larger Mercedes EQC when it arrives in 2021, and is set to look similar to the already-revealed Mercedes GLB (pictured).

The GLB was unveiled in June, boasting significant off-road capability and a range of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. Mercedes' 4MATIC four-wheel-drive system is optional on these models.

From the outside, the GLB echoes the boxy styling of the iconic Mercedes G-Class SUV and the EQB is expected to differ little from its internal-combustion-engined sibling, however distinctive styling touches associated with Mercedes' EQ electric models are certain to appear.

Although the GLB is set to be offered with seating for up to seven occupants, it hasn't been confirmed if the electric EQB will manage the same capacity, due to the presence of its battery pack.

Exact details of the EQB's electric powertrain are unconfirmed as yet, but a driving range of around 300 miles is expected, in order to be competitive with the Kia e-Niro and Hyundai Kona Electric.

The EQB is just one of the 10 electric models Mercedes plans to have on sale by the end of 2020. This line-up also includes the Mercedes EQA hatchback and Mercedes EQV people carrier.
