>“Even though Malcolm has been giving timelines he has no control over what happens in the lab nor does he have control over the staffing situation at the present time and that comes down to money. Priorities change almost constantly as you well know and this can further have an impact on delays.”

If Malcolm doesn’t have control over the timelines, staffing, money, or priorities – who the heck does? Do you have any idea where these timelines come from? How about from the very people who are working on the science with full knowledge of staff and budget constraints. It's not as if they decide that with 12 people they can get something done in a year and then suddenly realize they only have six. Timelines consider staff, budget, lab availability, and should include contingencies. Are you aware of what most of these timeframes are for? Try IND submissions that come well after the discovery phase – meaning a time of relatively few surprises that is possible to forecast and control. By the time a company announces plans for an IND submission date, they should have a very good idea of the testing required and the results they expect to satisfy the application process – especially after discussions with the FDA about these very steps. Are you aware that cycx consciously increased executive pay by more than enough to cover two to three full time scientists in the last couple years and just OK’d close to $4Mil for the facility? How is that a lack of control for staffing or money? Even if you think the science is difficult to control, are you aware that many of the patent applications slipped into an abandoned status on the basis of a lack of response from cygx – and in fact two applications are still listed as abandoned. Is being on top of the patent application process outside of Malcolm’s control too? Spin that as a good or responsible thing if you can.

Your words make Malcolm out to be less than a figure head – without any control - and suggest that’s OK for his position and further have suggested that people who recognize that managers should actually manage are clueless. Time to get a dictionary.

CEO [sE-E-'O] -noun
chief executive officer
1. the executive with the chief decision-making authority in an organization or business
2. the corporate executive responsible for the operations of the firm

I’m sure that Malcolm is a wonderful and well-intentioned guy – but he has not demonstrated that he is an effective manager by any objective measure. With the recent events, it looks like things may be changing and in fact we may be seeing the first steps of exercising control. There’s even a glimmer of hope that he has recognized the need for someone to step into his position, which might have prompted some of the succession planning in the first place. Then again maybe succession planning is out of his control as well – you crack me up with this stuff.
