Payano and fellow former bantamweight titleholder Luis Nery were about even through eight rounds before Nery knocked Payano out on a vicious body shot.

Boxing’s only eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao won the main event, over slugger Keith Thurman in a fight that was billed as one of the biggest boxing matches of the year to win the World Welterweight Championship. Pacquiao will likely be heading to a unification bout with the winner of the upcoming Errol Spence Jr. and Shawn Porter.
