Let’s agree on a simple business fundamental and that is there is nothing for free. If it is for free then it is not a business. Someone, somehow will need to pay for it, otherwise the business will bankrupt.

Let’s also agree that free means less less access, less service and less information. Let’s give a couple of simple examples:

IHUB is for free, but there are limits to what you can do compared to a paying member. Furthermore, IHUB benefits from advertising. So it is critically important to retain free members to make more money on advertising.

Facebook and Twitter are 100% free to consumers but again, companies are making money through advertisement to a huge number of people.

As for the distracted driving apps, I have not seen a successful business model where the app is free and fully supported directly through consumer.

You may get the app for free if you are a teen and your parents are paying to protect you while driving

You may get the app for free through your employer

You may get the app for free through your insurance company

You may get the app for free through your cell phone service provider as a perk for you to stay or as a means to attract others to switch from one service provider to the others

I hope that everybody agrees that there is nothing is free in business.
