Honestly, these people should hire an author to write their propaganda and, most especially, their excuses. Someone who can worry about creating a credible narrative and maintaining internal consistency would be good. (Correct spelling, punctuation, grammar and word choice would be gravy on the potatoes.
The whole Performance Division fiasco could have benefitted from a expert story teller. We all remember how they needed a large sum of money for 'safety equipment' even though their driver operated a performance driving school and presumably owned a fair amount of it, himself. With some more effort maybe it could have been 'explained' how guys building cars in their backyards managed to run at Bonneville even though they had nothing like that sum of money. Then there were the boats meant to set the water speed record. Harry Schoell operated a company that builds performance boats and was a well known racer when younger … it's hard to imagine that they couldn't figure out how to hook one of their allegedly superior engines up to the prop. Maybe a really creative writer could have pinned it on a government conspiracy, or something.
What I really want to say is that I just wish they would go to a lawyer, declare bankruptcy and therefore upgrade the credibility of the market just a tiny bit.
