Sorry but this is BIG BS!
If a SSL certificate expires, it means nothing more then that they either didn't extent the certificate in time, or that they need a new certificate because it is just out of time.
The website works fine if you choose to ignore the certificate warning.
Not having a proper SSL certificate just means that if you fill in a form on a website, the communication isn't secured. Which means it is easier for other persons to read into it.

It isn't very uncommon, it happens to many companies. However it would be better if they keep it updated, because doesn't look to good on your website, and it seems some people that have no idea what they are talking about, might misplace it for a warning about the possibility of criminal behavior. But many companies have no web developer working for them on a day to day basis keeping track of such problems.
Greenshift has no forms on their website, so the out of date certificate has no effect for those. And also no effect on the possibilities for criminals to abuse the website. So there is NO WAY this warning about the certificate can be a sign of criminal behavior.
