Anyone that’s had a sunburn knows about the dangerous effects that UV rays have on the skin. Those same damaging rays - which travel in the ultraviolet light spectrum, just beneath visible light - can also damage multiple other surfaces like skylights, roofs, buildings, interior carpeting and furnishings, tanks, industrial equipment, and even merchandise inside a store.
For example, if you have an untreated wood surface, you can pretty quickly observe the impact of UV rays through fading. There is also damage of the underlying wood fibers that manifests as board warping and cracking.
And it's not just building surfaces impacted, industrial equipment including tanks and pipes can also suffer damage from harmful UV rays.
Left untreated, painted, plastic, metal surfaces, concrete floors, walls, masonry, and stucco will all suffer from UV radiation. The UV light breaks down polymers and other bond chains within the materials, weakening them over time, causing fading, cracking, hazing, warping, and disintegration.
While skylights offer multiple daylighting benefits that are shown to decrease energy costs by bringing in natural light and improve productivity and an overall sense of satisfaction for building occupants, they also can allow through damaging UV rays. And those rays can damage anything on the building interior that is in their path.
One example is priceless artwork. Several years ago, we helped the Frost Art Museum in Miami, Florida solve a serious issue they were having due to UV rays streaming through skylights. Artwork inside the museum was being damaged by the rays and they weren’t sure what do to. We recommended our Energy Protect™ thermal insulation coating which dried translucent over the skylights (still allowing through 90-92% of the visible light, the same as glass pane windows) while reducing UV penetration by 80%, and solving their problem.
