When the electric field is applied along the flow direction in a small section of the pipeline, the field polarizes and aggregates the particles suspended inside the base liquid into short chains along the flow direction.... On the other hand, if we deliberately shake the crude oil violently, the chains will be broken and the viscosity will return to the original value quickly.



Pump stations (logically located just before the AOT) move the crude oil through the AOT and the pipeline to the next station. The pump stations are designed to increase the pressure in the pipeline in order to maintain flow to keep the liquid petroleum moving at about walking speed. Typically, pump stations are situated 40-60 miles apart. The viscosity reduction can last more than 100 hours suggesting fewer AOT are needed. But they still need to have an AOT following each pump station because each pump station will obviously shake the crude oil violently and breakdown the chains.

I am not being negative here, but they will need to iron out these problems as they decide to add more AOTs to the test site in order to increase the flow of petroleum in the pipeline.
