Fiber internet is available in many major cities for consumers and is very affordable. Roughly 25% of the US population has access to a fiber connection. Yes, it's limited to specific areas but people living in cities such as Austin TX and San Francisco CA can get 1 Gig internet service in their home for as low as $99 per month. Many of the big players offer gigabit service to consumers including AT&T, Cox Cable, Xfinity (Comcast), and Google. There are also more and more small ISP's moving to gigabit offerings including Sonic in the bay area and C Spire covering most of Mississippi. Luckily you don't need fiber pulled into each house as there is plenty of bandwidth over copper for the last haul while maintaining performance.

Cable companies now also offer high speed internet over the regular cable TV connection to homes with speeds as high as 500MBit/s using a cable modem.
