No one seems to know how much floor space 5.5 million adult worms will take up. So, I am thinking it will take a lot more square footage than most people would think.

To me, it is a key statistic in evaluating how large the buildings need to be to support 20 metric tons of silk (a guess) after one year of normal production. According to another poster 5.5 millions of cocoons to produce one metric ton of silk would equate to 1.1 billion worms for 20 metric tons.
