Any catalyst showing up will change things instantaneously. I'd say those stacked orders on the ask are simply there to corral shares into their awaiting lower bids. While the wide spread slows the tempo down, making it easier to do that, they also take a risk that all those shares could be taken out with one punch, as recently witnessed.
