No, the opposite. Coal plants are baseload. Fuel cells are base load but can operate as cycling (load following). So, coal plants would see fuel cells as substitutes not complements.

It's true that fuel cells could use carbon emissions as an input and generate electricity while also concentrating the carbon emissions so that they could be captured and either used or stored, but that would require investment in costly plant by the coal companies in a resource that could replace themselves. So, not going to happen.

Exxon doesn't care about the coal plants, they are interested in natural gas side of things.
