2G services (in China) to peak in 2006

Second-generation (2G) mobile services in China are expected to peak at about 370 million users in 2006, according to projections from the mainland's telecommunications regulator.

High-speed third-generation (3G) services would not take a hold on the market until the following year, said the Telecommunication Planning and Research Institute, under the Ministry of Information Industry.

The regulator said China's base of 2G users would start to decline from 2007. By then, an estimated 15 per cent of the mainland's mobile-phone users would be using 3G, rising to 80 per cent by 2010 when the pool reaches 600 million.

The government projections were revealed yesterday by Yu Chengdong, Huawei Technologies' vice-president and chief director for wireless products, at a 3G conference in Beijing.

The mainland is expected to issue 3G licences late next year.
