next Supercomputer of DOE

The next supercomputer of the DOE will be disappointing.

The DOE’s expectation is that every procurement cycle would provide a 5x or 10x increase in supercomputer performance at an equivalent cost. What they saw with the initial bids for Perlmutter was a 2x boost, although as it stands today, they will probably end up with something closer to 3x when the system boots up in 2020.




Not only Intel is facing this.

Intel is struggling more then expected because they wanted to pack more technolgy-improvements into the 10nm process.

So they wanted to tackle more problems in one single step.

TSMC is going from 12nm to 7nm to 7nm+ to 6nm.

I am really thrilled to see this.
Now there is stormy weather ahead.
