Hey YoTW, Silkworms have no issue exiting the cocoon they use an enzyme called Serrapeptase to dissolve the cocoon and escape.

As far as breeding goes I believe currently the cocoons are tested and the ones with desired traits are pulled from the batch and allowed to breed.
We developed a way to test the cocoon without damaging the worm.

I would guess and say no more than 5-10% of the batches are for breeding since the egg ratio is about 150:1
