Joe,

If production demands rose sufficiently, it would be possible to duplicate the H-D engines with clones, of much better quality. I would present the aluminum HEMI engines available from Summit Racing http://www.summitracing.com/ , and others, as an example used by drag racers and classic car builders. I.e.: if you can't get a HEMI from MOPAR, you can certainly get them elsewhere.

I there is a need, there will be an answer. It takes very few minor changes to avoid any patents. If it looks, smells, leaks, and sounds like a HAWG (..and is fast..) purist lust will evaporate in the face of superior performance.

As for frames, same story. There are numerous custom frame builders that could tool up and build much superior frames to H-D clunky offerings. As previously mentioned, if NASA used technology as far out of date as Harley's, the Space Shuttles would be launched by dropping a huge rock from a giant tower tied to a catapult rope.

If you want a Hawgly, and are satified to ride what comes in the box - that's cool. But most of the guys start replacing stuff the minute they sign the loan papers. Hence, there is a need for custom makers - and eventually one that's well run and well funded will make a real dent in H-D's wrinkle.
