Good morning, sir,
In my research into horse deaths I read that most of them occur during claiming races, the also-rans of the sport. Of course the races are the bulk of the cards.
Paradise Park in Arizona suffered fifty horse deaths during the 2017-2018 season, according to the Press-Enterprise.
I'd guess that one hardly hears about them because attention is paid to the money horses.
I was at the finish line at the Del Mar race track many years ago, rooting on my horse. At the moment the winner crossed the line a sharp crack filled the air. The winning horse had broken its lower leg. The jockey held on, slowing the limping horse to a painful stop, its leg flopping and dangling like a limp rag. A van took the horse away. It was euthanized.
